The idea for GAO’s double-sided sequin paintings was born from an intimate moment with his daughter. While gifting her sequin-covered children’s books, a creative spark ignited, leading to this unique concept where two stories coexist on a single canvas.
Each painting reveals two corresponding sides: on one, an iconic artwork, and on the other, the portrait of the artist who created it. Thanks to the shimmering texture of the sequin, it becomes possible to play with the surfaces, subtly revealing elements from both sides. For instance, the artist’s eyes might appear through his own painting, as if observing it from within, creating a mysterious connection between the creator and their creation.
GAO has also expanded this concept to a variety of themes: pop culture icons, famous movie posters, or even vintage illustrations. Each painting becomes a play of light and shadow, where the sequin transforms the works into evolving stories, allowing the imagination to roam free.
